SAR Tech dies on rescue mission
November 9, 2011
A Search and Rescue Technician from Canadian Forces Base Trenton in Ontario died last week during a rescue mission in ocean water in Canada’s North.
The Department of National Defence reports that Sgt. Janick Gilbert died Oct. 28 near Igloolik, NU near Baffin Island. The incident is under investigation and DND has released little other information but reports say that three SAR technicians entered the water to rescue two people stranded in a boat. The other techs and the rescue subjects all survived.
For many years Raven Rescue has provided advanced level swiftwater training for Canadian Forces SAR Techs from CFB Comox and Winnipeg. We have found them to be consumate professionals with excellent skills and abilities in a range of SAR disciplines. DND reports that Canadian SAR Techs have saved thousands of lives nationwide. We are lucky to have such highly trained and dedicated search and rescue professionals.
It is always a tragedy when someone dies in the course of trying to help others, and Raven Rescue extends our sympathy to Sgt. Gilbert’s family, friends and colleagues.
