The CMC MPD.

September 14, 2011

What is an MPD and is it a good choice for you?

If you have not yet seen one of CMC’s MDPs (mutli-purpose device) you soon will.  This device functions as a variable-friction descent control device for rescue systems and rappels, incorporates a high efficiently pulley with an integral rope-locking mechanism for a haul system and it meets the BCCTR (British Columbia Council of Technical Rescue) Rescue Belay Competency Criteria. So what does all that mean….........?  This means the MPD can be used as a lowering device on the main line and can be quickly converted to a raise system without switching out or replacing hardware.  The fact that it can be used as a belay device as well means with 2 MPDs you have a complete and efficient main line and belay line rescue system that is simple to use. Use of the MPD offers fewer components, faster rigging, quick changeovers and as a result lower risk. Although we like this device, its integration into your service should not be seen as an alternative to learning core skills such as the tandem prusik belay, main line changeovers,  or use of other decent control devices.

The MPD comes in both a G Rated (Red-12.5 and 13mm rope) and L Rated (Silver - fits 11mm rope) version.

Know the Knots

Our approach to rescue focusses on low-to high risk decision-making, and simple, fast techniques. When applied to rope work, there are a myriad of knots to know and ways to rig a system, but here are the basics we recommend for anyone working around swiftwater, surface ice or employing low and high angle rope systems.

our approach

We believe training should be tailored to the specific needs of each client. While we teach all the skills and knowledge necessary for certification, we approach a course for emergency personnel in an entirely different manner than one for resource managers or outdoor guides.
