Water

Surface Water First Responder

This course is designed for emergency responders and others who work around lakes, ponds, flood waters or other non or slow moving water.

Students learn shore-based rescue “reach” and “throw” techniques using common rescue equipment. Participants also learn low risk “go” rescue and evacuation techniques.

Please note: While this class fulfills NFPA requirements for Surface Water Awareness level, it goes well beyond Awareness by teaching students self-rescue and in-water rescue techniques - again, for non-moving water (defined by the NFPA as water moving less than 1.85 km/h). It is up to the employer (or AHJ) to decide whether or not personnel may perform the full range of skills taught. To learn more about Training Levels, please see our FAQ.

What basic equipment do I need to be able to perform a safe and effective surface ice rescue?

February 1, 2012

This is one of the questions our instructors get all the time from our students.  As such we thought we might write something up to be used as a reference and help point you in the right direction.

Starting a Swiftwater Rescue Team

By Phil Turnbull, Rescue 3 International

Perched atop the brown Suburban sits little Emily, clutching the roof rack and calling for help while deafening water pounds past the semi-submerged car. How prepared are you to deal with this situation?

our approach

We believe training should be tailored to the specific needs of each client. While we teach all the skills and knowledge necessary for certification, we approach a course for emergency personnel in an entirely different manner than one for resource managers or outdoor guides.
